Academy's tribute to fallen former students
now duplicated on this website

Last year, the Fire Academy created a "Wall of Honor" in the reception area of its office on the second floor of the 1600 building. The wall is dedicated to former students who have died while involved in fire/rescue activities or while on active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces. You may now have a virtual look at this wall by going to www.fireacademy.org/wall-of-honor.htm.

Phenomenal firefighter website turns two

If you've taken a few of the Special Ops classes at the Fire Academy you've undoubtedly met Instructors Jim Walsh and Jeff Ponds. Jeff is also the Academys' Special Operations Program Manager
Jeff Ponds Jimm Walsh

Two years ago, the two decided to create a "neutral, unbiased and un-intimidating" website dedicated to the art of firefighting - a site where they could share ideas, methods, and techniques with other firefighters.

Surprised by their incredible success
Jeff and Jim started vententersearch.com with the intentions of sharing some information on the local level. But it quickly became so much more than that. The site has drawn emails, comments, and material from people all over the world!

In just two years, they have had 600,000 visits to the site, with an average of over 2,000 per day from more than 30 countries. The first 148 postings on the site drew 1839 comments. Jim and Jeff say they have "some big things in the works for the future…and will be unveiling some new things very soon."

Congratulations guys and Happy Birthday!

Readers, check out their site at www.vententersearch.com.

Flashover Symposium Coming, Dates TBA

This course provides advanced firefighter survival methods and scenarios, along with live-fire evolutions that provide students the opportunity to practice flashover survival techniques. There is no other way for a firefighter to safely experience a flashover situation! Unfortunately, in a real fire situation, most of the firefighters who have witnessed flashover have died as a result.

The Swede Survival Flashover Training System provides the opportunity for students to observe fire behavior and to recognize the signs of an impending "flashover." What's more, they get to safely experience the effects of flashover, while gaining first-hand experience with the proper use and value of personal safety equipment. And all of this takes place in a safe, controlled environment.

By creating these conditions over and over again, fire department personnel are provided with the knowledge and skills to recognize and react to this dangerous situation. This training is invaluable and should be required for all active firefighters.
