ANNOUNCEMENTS, NOTICES, REPORTS

*State Announces Changes in Firefighter I and II Program

The 2008 edition of NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications is out and states and Canadian provinces providing certification are all in the process of adopting the new standard, which also requires all of the texts to be updated considerably.

Over the last year the Bureau has conducted numerous meetings and hearings on the curriculum and text revisions. Besides the changes in hours, one significant “Florida only” update is to revise the name of the programs at the direction of the legislative legal oversight group, Joint Administrative Procedures Committee. So, hopefully only until the next Legislative session, Firefighter 1 will now be known as “Part 1” and Firefighter 2 as “Part 2”.

This does not change any existing certifications held by individuals or the acceptance of the Firefighter 2 certifications for ProBoard, however once the new curriculum and testing is in effect Florida Firefighter Part 1 will be accepted by ProBoard for Firefighter 1, which it previously was not. Watch for more information on the A-list, FFCA’s Fire Service Today and other publications.

Digital Fingerprints Available via PearsonVue.com
from the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training

Florida Firefighter II, Retention, Firesafety and Special Firesafety Inspector application requirements just became a bit easier to submit and faster to approve. The reason is the availability of digital fingerprinting through our testing partner PearsonVue in cooperation with IBT. With this service, applicants, after submitting their application on-line (Retention, Firesafety and Special Firesafety Inspectors) or submitted by their Training Center (Firefighter II) can have their fingerprints digitally taken and electronically transmitted with results being delivered to the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training in hours instead of days.
