*Digital Fingerprints Available via PearsonVue.com
from the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training

Florida Firefighter II, Retention, Firesafety and Special Firesafety Inspector application requirements just became a bit easier to submit and faster to approve. The reason is the availability of digital fingerprinting through our testing partner PearsonVue in cooperation with IBT. With this service, applicants, after submitting their application on-line (Retention, Firesafety and Special Firesafety Inspectors) or submitted by their Training Center (Firefighter
II) can have their fingerprints digitally taken and electronically transmitted with results being delivered to the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training in hours instead of days.

*Enough is Enough...Buckle Up!
by U.S. Fire Administrator Greg Cade

Excerpt:

"...As many of you already know, and many others should know, firefighter Christopher Brian Hunton, age 27, was a member of the Amarillo Texas Fire Department for one year. On April 23, 2005 he fell out of his fire truck responding to an alarm; he died two days later from his injuries. Brian was not wearing his seat belt. It is in his name — and in the names of others who suffered a similar fate — that we continue to work to ensure all firefighters buckle up. It requires such little effort to ensure all firefighters go home at the end of the day and not become victims of this preventable death...."

"...Several weeks ago I received word that Dallas Fire Chief Eddie Burns, Sr. successfully led a department-wide effort to secure the 100% support of seatbelt usage by the members of the Dallas Fire Department. Over 1,700 employees of the Dallas Fire Department have taken the simple and straight forward national seatbelt pledge to ensure that each and every member of the Dallas Fire Department is safely secured to moving fire apparatus. My sincere congratulations to the members of the Dallas Fire
Department and to Chief Burns for this achievement.

"Just yesterday I learned that Frederick County, Maryland has also achieved their 100% seatbelt pledge commitment. They join the growing ranks of departments that have achieved 100%...
I am pleased to announce that the Canadian Fire Services have also joined this effort."

Florida leads the nation with 35 fire departments with 100% Compliance.

*NWCG Safety Advisory on Wildland Fire Deaths
forwarded by FFCA Emergency Response Committee

On July 7 this year, we reached the number of deaths in wildland fire operations for 2008 that we experienced during all of 2007. A total of nine wildland firefighters died in the line of duty in 2007 and nine have died so far this year. That's nine people who won't be going home to their families and friends after work any more.

Fire and Emergency Services (SAFER) Grants Now Open – Available Funds Increased

Under the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2008, Congress appropriated $190 million for SAFER Grants. The grants are competitive but the increase of funding in FY2008 provided by the Congress is more than 60% higher than the FY2007 level -- equally increasing the applicant's chance for success.

USFA Releases Fire-Related Firefighter Injuries Report

EMMITSBURG, MD. - Twice as many firefighters are injured each year performing fireground duties as there are fire injuries to the civilian population, according to a new report issued today by the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). In 2004, there were an estimated 36,880 firefighter fireground injuries. The new report, Fire-Related Firefighter Injuries in 2004, was developed by the National Fire Data Center, part of the U.S. Fire Administration, and is based primarily on analyses of the 2004 National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) (http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/fireservice/nfirs/) Version 5.0 data.
