*Enough is Enough...Buckle Up! "...As many of you already know, and many others should know, firefighter Christopher Brian Hunton, age 27, was a member of the Amarillo Texas Fire Department for one year. On April 23, 2005 he fell out of his fire truck responding to an alarm; he died two days later from his injuries. Brian was not wearing his seat belt. It is in his name and in the names of others who suffered a similar fate that we continue to work to ensure all firefighters buckle up. It requires such little effort to ensure all firefighters go home at the end of the day and not become victims of this preventable death...." "...Several
weeks ago I received word that Dallas Fire Chief Eddie Burns, Sr. successfully
led a department-wide effort to secure the 100% support of seatbelt usage
by the members of the Dallas Fire Department. Over 1,700 employees of
the Dallas Fire Department have taken the simple and straight forward
national seatbelt pledge to ensure that each and every member of the Dallas
Fire Department is safely secured to moving fire apparatus. My sincere
congratulations to the members of the Dallas Fire Florida leads the nation with 35 fire departments with 100% Compliance. To take the National Fire Service Seat Belt Pledge, go to http://www.trainingdivision.com/seatbeltpledge.asp For pledge form, click

Safety Advisory on Wildland Fire Deaths On July 7 this year, we reached the number of
deaths in wildland fire operations for 2008 that we experienced during
all of 2007. A total of nine wildland firefighters died in the line of
duty in 2007 and nine have died so far this year. That's nine people who
won't be going home to their families and friends after work any more. Fire and Emergency Services (SAFER) Grants Now Open Available Funds Increased Under the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2008, Congress appropriated $190 million for SAFER Grants. The grants are competitive but the increase of funding in FY2008 provided by the Congress is more than 60% higher than the FY2007 level -- equally increasing the applicant's chance for success. EMMITSBURG, MD. - Twice as many firefighters are injured each year performing fireground duties as there are fire injuries to the civilian population, according to a new report issued today by the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). In 2004, there were an estimated 36,880 firefighter fireground injuries. The new report, Fire-Related Firefighter Injuries in 2004, was developed by the National Fire Data Center, part of the U.S. Fire Administration, and is based primarily on analyses of the 2004 National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) (http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/fireservice/nfirs/) Version 5.0 data.
