The Florida Department of Education requires that all EMT students must demonstrate reading, language and math skills at a 10th grade level or higher. This may be accomplished by taking the TABE test, Survey Level D. The charge for the test is included in your Fire Academy application fee.

You need not take the test if you have earned and can present an AA, AS or higher college degree from an accredited college or university.

Practice Materials Available
Free copies of a basic academic refresher pamphlet and three practice tests – one each in reading, language and math – are available in the reception area of the Academy office. Or you may open the pdf versions below and print them out yourself. Answer keys are provided for each test.

Before you call to register for the test, please choose the day, date, and time you wish to take it. Allow two hours for your test appointment. Choose your start time from the hours listed below.
